Scale Bespoke Integrations

Bespoke software integrations for when nothing off the shelf fits.

Sooner or later a business outgrows what its software was designed to do. That is the point where you either change how you work to suit the tool, or have something built to suit you.

The service

What are bespoke software integrations?

Bespoke software integrations are built for one business: yours.

Most of the time you should not need it. Off-the-shelf software is cheaper, faster and someone else maintains it, and a standard API integration covers most cases. We will always look for that answer first.

But when the workaround has become a full-time job, or the spreadsheet everything depends on has one author, bespoke stops being extravagant and starts being the sensible option.

Systems mapped before they are automated

Deliverables

What’s included.

Scoped properly, built to be maintained, and handed over with the documentation to prove it.

Custom middleware

The translation layer between two systems with no common language.

Legacy system connections

Getting data in and out of software that predates the idea of an API.

E-commerce integrations

Stock, pricing and orders kept in step across the shop, the warehouse and the accounts.

Finance connections

Invoices and payments landing in your accounting system without a monthly export.

Monitoring and alerts

Failures that reach a person, and records that queue instead of vanishing while it is fixed.

Why it matters

The workaround is the real cost.

Manual bridges between systems rarely get costed. The hours are spread across several people, the errors are absorbed quietly, and the risk only becomes visible when the person who understood the spreadsheet leaves. Mapping that properly is a business process design job before it is a build.

Add it up over a year and bespoke work often looks cheap. Not always, and we will tell you when it does not, but often enough to be worth checking properly.

What you get

Boring, in the best way.

Bespoke work is judged on what stops happening: the retyping, the workaround nobody costed, and the dependency on one person who knows how the spreadsheet works.

Nothing gets retyped

Data moves between systems that were never designed to talk, without a person in the middle translating it.

Nothing gets forgotten

The process survives the person who invented it leaving, because it is written down and handed over rather than held in somebody's head.

Nothing is a mystery

Failures reach a human being rather than a log file, and records queue instead of vanishing while something is fixed.

How we work

From map to machine.

Map the process

We sit with the people who do the work and write down what actually happens, not what the manual says.

Fix it first

Automating a bad process makes it fail faster. Anything broken gets straightened out before it is built.

Build and connect

The tools you already pay for, wired together, with the gaps filled by something built for you.

Hand it over

Documented, monitored and explained to your team, so the system is yours and not ours.

Our approach

Built to be handed over, not to be depended on.

Bespoke software integrations are only a good idea if somebody can maintain them later. We write them to be read, document how they work, and hand over the code along with everything else.

We also build in the boring parts most quotes leave out: error handling, retries and alerting. Those are what decide whether it is still running in three years.

Questions

Frequently asked.

It costs more up front than a subscription. Whether it is expensive depends on what the current workaround costs you in hours and mistakes, which is worth measuring before deciding. If you are weighing that against agency fees generally, our guide to digital marketing agency costs in the UK sets out how we price work.

You do. You get the repository, the documentation and the deployment details, so another developer could pick it up without us.

Then you should probably move to it, and we will say so. Building something bespoke is not a reason to stay on it once the market has caught up.
